ABOUT US
Incorporated July 6th, 2019. We are a group of volunteers dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Port Orange Florida East Coast Railway Depot.
The Depot sits near the FEC mainline in Port Orange Depot Park Located at 415 Herbert St. On the east side of the depot there is a sign board detailing the history the depot and railroading in the area.
We are currently working with the city of Port Orange to make this Depot and Park into what we will call the Port Orange Railway Experience.
The depot derives its significance from architectural value, as a good example of vernacular railroad architecture, of how railroad companies altered existing buildings over time to reflect changing economic forces and the needs of the community.
This building is the city’s only historic transportation-related building, and the county’s only remaining resource from the FEC Railway, the major transportation entity on Florida’s east coast from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
Originally built in 1894 as two buildings. A freight depot and a passenger station. They were joined together in 1938 and the building was used as a freight depot until 1964.
On February 5, 1998, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Listed under Criteria A and C for Architecture and Transportation; Period of significance is 1894-1946.
Port Orange Railway Society is a 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit Organization.
